Tairn and Co.

A complete brand for Tairn and Co., a Toronto tea company, from the first mark to the online store. They came to us for packaging. We started earlier, with the identity, so every box, image and page would come from one system. The work covered the logo, packaging, product photography and an ecommerce site ready for launch.

Tairn and Co., brand identity: Three tea cartons with rust, olive and burgundy side panels standing on a pale stone ledge, each with loose tea or dried hibiscus and orange peel in front, soft window light on a plaster wall.

The Business

A complete brand for Tairn and Co., a Toronto tea company, from the first mark to the online store. They came to us for packaging. We started earlier, with the identity, so every box, image and page would come from one system. The work covered the logo, packaging, product photography and an ecommerce site ready for launch.

Tairn and Co.: The Tairn&Co. wordmark in black serif type, centred on a plain warm cream background.

Brand Identity

A new tea brand has no history to lean on. It has to look established on its very first box.

We kept the wordmark deliberately simple: one black mark on warm cream stock, with nothing decorative around it. That restraint is what lets it work everywhere. It reads embossed on a carton, printed small on a tin lid and scaled across a website header.

Tairn and Co.: Six tea cartons in a row on a stone ledge, each with a different coloured side panel, a small mound of its loose tea in front of each.
Tairn and Co.: Close crop of a cream carton corner with the Tairn&Co. wordmark blind embossed on the lid, printed in black on the front, and a rust side panel listing origin and region.
Tairn and Co.: An open cream carton on a stone ledge with a silver resealable pouch labelled OR.02 Uji Sencha rising out of it, loose green tea piled in front.

Packaging

Each flavour has its own colour, so a customer can find Darjeeling, Sencha or Hibiscus from across the shop without reading a word.

Everything else stays fixed: the wordmark position, the type and the layout of the information panel. That consistency is what makes six different boxes read as one brand.

Tea products carry required details, including ingredients, net weight and brewing instructions. We designed that panel into the system from the start, so a new flavour needs one new colour, not a new carton.

Tairn and Co.: Presentation sheet showing three cartons in rust, olive and burgundy, their side panels laid flat, and three matching silver pouches.
Tairn and Co.: A matte grey metal tin with a rust and cream OR.01 label beside a small open tin of black tea and a matching Darjeeling carton, on stone in warm side light.
Tairn and Co.: A grey metal tin with an OR.01 label between a Darjeeling carton and a glass brewer of amber tea, a steel measuring scoop of black leaves in front.
Tairn and Co.: Technical sheet with front, side and three quarter carton views and pouches for OR.02 Uji Sencha and BT.02 Hibiscus Orange Peel, brewing details in each row.
Tairn and Co.: Macro view of steeped green tea leaves unfurled inside a glass vessel, with pale gold liquid and condensation on the glass.

Photography

The imagery had to sell the tea in two places: on a retail shelf and on a product page.

We art directed the set around what is inside the box. The wet leaf, the weigh out, the pour and the service bar show the product, not just the packaging. A shot list planned every image against where it would be used, so the store has a complete library ready for launch.

Tairn and Co.: Art direction board of eight photographs titled Photography Art Direction, including a product still life, leaf macros, a desk scene, a tea bar and a Toronto skyline view.
Tairn and Co.: A hand pouring water from a black gooseneck kettle into a glass brewer of black tea, with a stone cup, a Darjeeling carton and a Kinfolk book on a stone counter.
Tairn and Co.: Hands spooning green tea from a silver pouch onto a ceramic dish on a black kitchen scale, an OR.02 carton and a stone cup on a steel counter.
Tairn and Co.: Full page website design titled The Collection, with a three by two grid of tea carton photos and prices, a brewing callout and a footer.

Website

The online store had to make choosing a tea simple and carry the brand from the box to the screen.

The flavour colours from the packaging run through the collection and product pages, so the carton on the shelf and the product online read as the same thing. Product pages carry the same brewing details as the box. Every page was designed for mobile as well as desktop.

Tairn and Co.: Website homepage design with the headline Tea, Reframed., a hero photo of a black kettle pouring into a glass brewer, and a row of six cartons below.
Tairn and Co.: Long mobile homepage design shown in full, with the Tea, Reframed. hero, the six tea range, product details and brewing sections.
Tairn and Co.: Website product page design for OR.01 Darjeeling Second Flush with a large carton photo, price, add to cart button, tasting notes and brewing figures.
Tairn and Co.: A single cream carton with a rust side panel labelled OR.01 Darjeeling Second Flush on a stone surface, black tea leaves scattered beside it.
Tairn and Co.: A bus shelter poster showing a kettle pouring into a glass brewer beside a Darjeeling carton with the headline The Art of the Pause, a pedestrian walking past.

Results

Tairn and Co. launches with a complete brand rather than a single box: one identity carried through packaging, photography, retail display and an online store.

Because every piece follows one system, adding a flavour or a product line is a matter of choosing a colour, not starting a redesign.

Tairn and Co.: A server in a dark apron sliding a stone cup and saucer across a marble counter to a customer, a Darjeeling carton and a glass pot of amber tea nearby in a sunlit cafe.
Tairn and Co.: A retail shelving unit under a large Tairn&Co. wordmark, cartons from two collections with loose tea on labelled shelves, and a tin, glass brewer and scoop on a tea ware shelf.
